Juan Sebastián Toro Pardo

Composer and philosopher

About

At the intersection of music and philosophy, Juan Sebastián Toro pursues his artistic research. Graduated from the National University of Colombia in both music (composition) and philosophy (with a thesis on music in Schopenhauer's masterpiece), Juan Sebastián Toro deepened his research with a master’s thesis in musicology at Sorbonne University - Paris IV that aimed to establish a definition of logic linking speech and music.

His creations, always engaged in exploring compositional issues, may initially appear disjointed and incoherent. However, it is the problem of coherence (a product of a certain logic) that they are meant to transgress. Once the shock of the absence of a generative motif has passed, the composer’s works reveal a rich inner life, filled with contradictory or coherent, necessary or futile sound phenomena; always in motion through a logic that unfolds infinitely.

Between phenomenology and Deleuze's philosophy, electronic, acoustic, or mixed music, new technologies, and their modes of thought, Juan Sebastián Toro aspires to create not only musical pieces but also concepts, images, and instruments. For him, the intersection of music and philosophy represents a break from linear and unidisciplinary production.
